Indiana Conservation Officer Levi Clark investigated a fatal ATV accident that occurred overnight on January 18, 2012. Mr. Edward A. Hurlock Jr. of Eagletown Road in Westfield was found deceased in the early morning hours of January 19. His death is suspected as a result of an accident while he was operating his ATV.

Preliminary information leads Officer Clark to believe Mr. Hurlock was on his way home late on the night of Jan 18th when he drove into a drainage ditch striking his head. Mr. Hurlock was discovered by his son in the early morning hours when his father had not returned home. Mr. Hurlock was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone that ATV accidents are serious and can be deadly. Operators should carefully read and obey the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper use of any ATV. Safety equipment can prevent a variety of injuries. A helmet and goggles are essential. In addition, operating with another person can assure assistance in the occurrence of an emergency.
