Egg Hunt 5

Easter egg hunts are quite common this time of year. Subdivisions, churches and the Hamilton County 4-H Junior Leaders all put on hunts in Noblesville, but nothing quite compares to the size of the annual community event held by the Noblesville Parks & Recreation Dept. and Hare Chevrolet at Forest Park, 701 Cicero Rd., Noblesville.

It only took a few minutes and hundreds of young children to clear 10,000 bright colored plastic eggs in four taped-off areas.

Recreation Director Susie Davis said coordinators normally plan for 1,500 kids. While the hunt occurred the first week of spring break and had cooler temperatures, the community responded in force. Minutes before the hunt started, children lined the age-grouped areas with parents standing two or three deep behind them trying to catch a glimpse of the short-lived frenzy.

The disc jockey counted down and yelled “Go!” Children flew into the hunting grounds. As I tried frantically to keep track of the children I’d taken photos of to ask their names after the eggs were gone, I noticed smiling faces and full baskets. Most children had eight to a dozen eggs each – some with more and a select few with less.

Knowing how popular the annual event had become, organizers were smart to flood the areas with eggs. They made it so if you found one egg, a half dozen more were located within arm’s length. Like shooting fish in a barrel, the eggs were everywhere.

While many families departed minutes after all the eggs were gone, event organizers provided plenty of reasons to stay – an airbrush tattoo artist, bounce houses, pictures with the Easter Bunny and the opening of the park’s carousel. Davis said the event is the spring kickoff for the department, and the egg-citement it provides is just the start of fun family activities at Noblesville parks this year.
