Screen-Free Week

With children spending more than 30 hours each week in front of some sort of “screen,” turning off the TV, video games and computer can be a challenge. But as part of national Screen-Free Week (formerly Turn off the TV Week), April 30-May 6, Earth Explorer Toys in Zionsville is giving kids an extra incentive to hit the off button: a $5 gift certificate.

To participate in Screen-Free Week with Earth Explorer Toys, children need to first sign a pledge card declaring they will watch no TV or DVDs, play no video games, and only use the computer if it’s for schoolwork. They also pledge to explore new screen-free activities. Kids also need to write down what activities they plan to do instead of screen-related activities and fill in a special log of their activities during Screen-Free Week.

Both the pledge card and the log are available at Earth Explorer Toys, located at 27 E. Pine Street in Zionsville, or online at the store’s Toy Time Blog at www.earthexplorertoys.com/blog. Kids should return their pledge card and log to the store by May 15, 2012 to receive their $5 gift certificate good on any item in the Earth Explorer Toys store – online or off.

Screen-Free Week is a nationwide event sponsored by Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood where millions of children and adults across the U.S. pledge to spend seven days screen-free. Studies show that children who watch less TV are more likely to read well and to be physically fit. Turning off screens also allows for more family time.

“Each week, American children spend more time in front of a screen than they do in school!” says Terri Bracken, owner of Earth Explorer Toys. “Screen-Free Week is a great way to jump-start our kids into more reading, learning and active play, something we’re committed to here at Earth Explorer Toys. It’s also a lot of fun!”
