The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released renderings last week of a temple to be built on the southwest corner of 116th Street and Spring Mill Road in Carmel.

Plans for the temple were first announced in October 2010, and the location was released in January 2011. The temple will serve the entire Indianapolis area.

Mormon temples are typically open to the public only on the day of their dedication, after which they are closed to all but formally dedicated members of the church. Some temples include meetinghouses, which do allow public access. There are an estimated 41,000 members of the LDS church in Indiana, according to statistics compiled by the Indianapolis Indiana Mormon Temple.

Groundbreaking for the projected 22,000-23,000-square-foot temple is expected to occur in September of this year.

More information about the temple can be found online at www.indianapolismormontemple.com.
