A new recruit class of Carmel firefighters received some hands-on experience Tuesday with a controlled burn exercise near 136th Street and Gray Road.

The exercise, which took place at a home scheduled for demolition – courtesy of the homeowners – allowed firefighters to practice combating real-world situations in a “simulated” environment.

“These guys are new firefighters,” said Bruce Knott, CFD fire marshal. “They’re allowed to do everything you would see on an initial fire. They learn about ventilation on the roof. They can see what it’s like to search inside smoke. You can also have small training fires in there so they can go in and learn how to locate them, how to spray certain patterns. They learn to consider the atmosphere, smoke color … a lot of those things can be talked about, and you can see pictures, but this lets you go in with all of your equipment and tools you would use and see what it’s really like.”
