Community Foundation of Boone County announces two Dr. Higgins Scholarship Recipients

The Community Foundation of Boone County is pleased to announce that Jennifer Behrens and Tara Schulte have been selected as the first recipients of the Dr. Higgins Medical School Scholarship.  Two scholarships, totaling $40,000, have been awarded from a fund established at the Community Foundation in memory of Dr. Otis C. and Blanche D. Higgins, to be used at any medical school in the U.S. for a student with strong ties to Boone or Tippecanoe County.

Jennifer Behrens will return this fall for her second year at Indiana University School of Medicine.  She is a 2007 graduate of Lebanon High School and a 2011 graduate of DePauw University, where she attended thanks in part to the prestigious Ronald Lee Copeland Scholarship, which covers full tuition.  While working toward her degree in Biochemistry, Jennifer also served as a student researcher at DePauw’s Dr. Henning Schneider Research Laboratory, where her research will be published in the fall of 2012.  Upon entering medical school, she has immersed herself in health-related activities, including the Westside Health Fair, Soldier’s Angels Letter Writing Team and the IU School of Medicine Art Exhibition.

Tara Schulte, who will enter her fourth year as a medical student, graduated from Zionsville High School in 2005 and Indiana University in 2009.  She attends A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Tara was involved in many activities and organizations at IU and has remained active in medical school, serving as the president of Hope’s Kitchen, treasurer for her Alpha Phi Omega chapter and fundraising chair for the National Osteopathic Women Physician’s Association.

Community Foundation of Boone County Executive Director Mike Caldwell commented, “Both Ms. Behrens and Ms. Schulte represent the high quality of academics, character and commitment to their community that Dr. and Mrs. Higgins embodied while serving the Lebanon area.  We have no doubt they would be proud to see these young women selected as recipients.”  The Dr. Higgins scholarship will again be available in 2013 for students enrolled in medical school.  Information will be posted to the Community Foundation website, www.communityfoundationbc.org in the fall.
