La Mie Emilie’s pie- and French-cuisine-loving patrons have been dropping in to say their goodbyes this month after the announcement that the restaurant will close its doors Saturday.

The French café and patisserie, owned by mother-daughter duo Cathy Egler and Emilie Myers, has served French fare in the Arts & Design District since August 2009.

“It’s extremely bittersweet,” said Myers of the decision to close. “I’m sad to leave my regulars. I’m sad to say goodbye to something profitable. But, at the same time, I’m gaining free time and some normalcy to my 26-year-old life.”

Egler and Myers decided to close the restaurant earlier this month, they said, to spend more time with Myers’ grandparents, whose health is failing.

“Because over the last three years we’ve put in so much time and dedication to the restaurant, we haven’t had much free time,” Myers said. “So we thought, maybe it was time to take some time for ourselves and spend time with our family.”

Because of the influx of well-wishers, Myers said the shop’s business has tripled since they announced the closing.

“It’s been a fun ride,” said Egler. “I feel very fortunate to have spent almost every waking hour of the last three years laughing and singing and playing with my daughter. Not many mothers get to do that.”

For those patrons who’ve asked about the possibility of Myers coming into their homes to cook for them – she’s not going to, she jokingly added – a cookbook featuring recipes from La Mie Emilie’s menu should be available by the end of August. Anyone wanting to get on the mailing list for it should contact Myers at [email protected].

“We just want to say thank you,” Myers said. “Thank you for the support and the opinions and the laughs.”
