On July 21 to 22, 2012, the Hamilton County Traffic Safety Partnership conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint at 4146 East 96th St. in Carmel, kicking off at 11:36 p.m. on Saturday night and ending at 2:23 a.m. on Sunday.
The officers checked 120 vehicles traveling westbound in the area ofBauer Drive, which is about a half-mile east of Keystone Parkway. Law enforcement officers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests to 22 drivers in total, due to initial indicators of the possibility of impaired driving.
Three drivers were arrested for operating while intoxicated. According to the probable cause affidavits, one driver had an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.12 and another tested at 0.16. The limit in Indianapolis 0.08. The third arrestee underwent testing by a Drug Recognition Examiner and was arrested due to impairment allegedly caused by cannabis (marijuana).
Two other drivers were arrested for license problems: One for driving while suspended with a prior conviction, and the other for having never received a license.
Drivers were stopped in the checkpoint line for an average of 72 seconds before being released, or otherwise directed to pull over for further investigation.
The HCTSP is a consortium of law enforcement agencies in Hamilton County working to increase the usage of seatbelts, combat aggressive driving, and decrease impaired driving with the overall goal of creating a safer Hamilton County. The HCTSP is comprised of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Dept., Fishers Police Dept., Carmel Police Dept., Noblesville Police Dept., and the Westfield Police Dept. with the assistance of the Indiana State Police.
