God and Science

Editor,

I am intrigued by the Sept. 11 letter from Mike Carmel. In it, he maintains that only atheists have the ability to, “look into the universe without limitation.” Mike assumes all Christians believe God is responsible for that which we do not understand. As a devout Christian, I believe in both God and science. Despite what a few Christians would have us believe (and apparently a few atheists), the two should not be considered mutually exclusive. I like to think of the Bible as a precursor to the scientific discoveries of our time. In my church, we used to have a wonderful senior pastor who put it this way: The Bible tells us all the wonderful things God has done. And scientific discoveries tell us how he did it!
