Friends of the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library recently announced the appointment of Zionsville resident Kelly Mills as the group’s new president.

Since its founding, the Friends organization has donated over $210,000 to support library programs for all ages, equipment purchases, landscaping and collection materials.

“What makes this library so wonderful is the programming,” said Mills. “That’s the difference between a good library and a great library; and the Friends make those programs possible.”

The main sources of funding for the group are membership fees and three annual book sales. Zionsville residents generously donate used books for the sales throughout the year and shop through the Friends Amazon.com link, available on the library Web site, to help generate regular donations from the online company.

Energetic and full of enthusiasm about the library and the volunteer organization that supports it, Mills is already hard at work creating new opportunities for community members to get involved.

“I’m all about growing the membership,” said Mills.

To encourage more involvement, Friends gift memberships are now being offered that feature a one-year individual membership bundled with a $25 Amazon gift card, and the purchaser’s choice of a library print, a package of eight library note cards or a Friends tote bag, all for only $50.

All Friends members joining or renewing their membership by today will be entered into a drawing for two free, roundtrip tickets from American Airlines, redeemable for travel anywhere in the continental United States, Caribbean, Canada, Bahamas, Bermuda or Mexico.

With so many opportunities for local Zionsville residents to get involved with the volunteer organization, Mills is upbeat. “I’m excited about the possibilities for our group and how we may help our favorite library,” she said.

Also, a new, members-only book to movie discussion group will begin in January. All Friends members are welcome to attend on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. January’s book and movie selection will be Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and the movie by the same name directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine.

Read the book and then watch the movie at the library Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The discussion session will meet at 7 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 23.

Friends membership information is available at the library’s circulation desk or online at http://www.zionsville.lib.in.us/hmmpl/page/friends. Annual membership dues are as low as $10 for an individual, $20 for a family and $50 for a benefactor. Free admission to all book sale preview parties is included with the membership.
