Indiana School Boards Association hosts School Law Seminar

On Dec. 14, 2012, Indiana School Boards Association  will conduct a one-day seminar for school attorneys, board members and school administrators that focuses on the some of the key legal issues facing public schools in today’s society.  The seminar will be held at the Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel.

Topics to be presented are “Terminating a Teacher Based on Performance: Utilizing the New Staff Performance Evaluation Law to Support Dismissal Under the New Termination Law” by Susan Traynor Chastain, Esq. of  Bose McKinney & Evans, Indianapolis, and “Raising Money to Pay the Bills: Referenda Options or Going to the Distressed Unit Appeal Board” by Jeffrey Qualkinbush, Esq. of Barnes & Thornburg, Indianapolis. Other topics to be included are “When is what you Say Illegal? Defamation of and by School Board Members, School Officials, and School Employees” by Kent Frandsen, Esq. of Parr Richey Obremskey Frandsen & Patterson, Lebanon and “School Attendance: What Are a Child’s (or Adult’s) Legal Rights to Attend School? What Are a School’s Rights Regarding Setting Tuition Fees and Denying Enrollment” by Amy Steketee, Esq., of Faegre Baker Daniels, South Bend. Jack Hittle, Esq. and Alex Pinegar, Esq., of Church Church Hittle & Antrim, Noblesville will discuss “Ethics for the School Attorney”.  Patrick Shoulders, Esq., of Ziemer Stayman Weitzel & Shoulders, Evansville will present “What Speech is “Free” on School Property? (Or, At the School House, What Do Religious Groups, Atheists, Pro-Life, Pro-Choice, Straight, Gay/Lesbian, Militarists, Pacifists, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and the Tea Party Have in Common?). The Seminar will close with a reflection of “Recent Legal Developments” by ISBA attorneys David Emmert, Lisa Tanselle, and Julie Slavens.
