2012 was a busy time at the Carmel Parks and Recreation Dept. Surfing the waves in Carmel, the No. 1 best place to live, and the East Woods frequently made headlines in Carmel during 2012.

The Waterpark became home to the FlowRider, the first simulated surf machine of its kind in Indiana. With more than 75,000 in attendance at The Waterpark this past summer, 14,000 FlowRider waivers signed, visits from 48 states and 14 countries, the FlowRider proved a hit with the public and media.

Extended School Enrichment had a total of 2,089 participants, a 5-percent growth from the previous year. The Summer Camp Series was expanded to ten total weeks and had 2,440 happy campers attend.

This year also brought the completion of some large projects in our parks. The Central Park East Woods opened its doors in November featuring more than 2 miles of additional trails, overlooks and interpretive signage. A nine-hole disc golf course was installed at Lawrence W. Inlow Park. The Skatepark received surface improvements and new rail additions. And, public feedback was sought in numerous meetings regarding what amenities and features to include within the North Campus of Central Park.

It was a big year for events and partnerships as well. The Fall Food Festival & Benefit brought in $1,100 to help fund scholarships. More than 2,000 luminaries and more than 2,000 guests filled the walking path of Central Park for the first ever Luminary Walk in December. Exciting new partnerships were also formed with Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, the Carmel Runners Club, and Dwight FreeneyProCamps.

If you think all of that was exciting, let’s peek ahead to what awaits in 2013. This year brings new, groundbreaking projects including the opening of the 146th Street bridge on the Monon Greenway, implementation of a disc golf course at Hazel Landing Park, design of Central Park West Commons playground, West Park Master Plan, improvements to The Waterpark overflow parking, rentable Cabana spaces within The Waterpark, adoption of the Central Park North Campus Master Plan and construction plans for a dog park, sport field improvements and shade structures in playground/sand wash off area in Founders Park, and the beginning of the Monon Greenway resurfacing project, a two-year commitment … just to name a few.

What would you like to see in the parks? Please leave a comment and let us know what some of your favorite things Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation did in 2012 and what you’d like to see in the future.
