The Carmel Symphony Orchestra highlights Carmel Symphony Principals in Mozart’s Flute & Harp Concerto in the Palladium, February 9 at 7:30pm. The CSO performs Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, and Barber’s Canzonetta for Oboe and Strings.
Written in Paris in 1778, Mozart’s ethereal Concerto for Flute and Harp is the only piece he ever wrote that includes a harp. Mozart’s colleague was inspired to remark, “I have never yet met a composer who has such an amazing wealth of ideas: I could almost wish he were not so lavish in using them.” Butler University instructor Wendy Muston is featured as harp soloist, and CSO Principal Flutist Karen Sheely – co-chair of the Board of Visitors for the Butler University Jordan College of Arts (and also a Butler graduate) – will be featured as flute soloist. “When I play the Mozart, I think about how fortunate I am to play this fabulous piece with a fantastic harpist, supported by an orchestra full of friends in a phenomenal hall,” says Sheely.
Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 is a brilliant work: Its premiere in 1937 received a standing ovation that lasted for over an hour, and restored Shostakovich as a leading Soviet composer.
The lyrical, song-like quality of Samuel Barber’s melodic writing and musical style is especially evident in Canzonetta for Oboe and Strings. Written in 1978, Barber defiantly finished the Canzonetta as he battled cancer. Annie Corrigan, Principal Oboe of the Carmel Symphony, is featured as soloist.
“It is a privilege to feature our wonderful Principals, Annie, Karen, and Wendy, in this concert,” says CSO Artistic Director David Bowden. “Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony is a veritable caldron of emotion, thrilling and triumphant, introspective and stunningly beautiful.”
