Monon Greenway bike riders received a mild shock last week when Carmel’s newest bike rack went missing.
No, thieves didn’t steal the $7,800 artwork/bike rack sitting on Main Street near Bub’s Burgers in the Arts & Design District. Carmel Spokeswoman Nancy Heck said city employees temporarily moved it to start street repaving.
When asked why the city didn’t wait to install the rack – which is outlined like a bright red car and offers parking for 10 bikes instead of one vehicle – Heck said the city wanted to capitalize on Bike to Work Day May 17.
The bike rack was slated to be returned to its former home after the street work was completed May 31.
