Noblesville will host a major tune-up before the annual Indiana State Fair Band Day contest as 26 schools from across Indiana will participate in the Black and Gold Marching Band Invitational on July 26 at Hare Chevrolet Field at Noblesville East Middle School.

“This year’s invitational is going to be much larger than last, as we will be hosting more than 26 bands from all over the state of Indiana. Last year, we had well over 1,000 spectators, and this year we are preparing for nearly 4,000,” Beth Hartman, invitational publicity chairwoman, said.

Tickets for the event are $6.

“It’s the best $6 they’ll ever spend,” NHS Band Director Eric Thornbury said.

The invitational begins at 6:30 p.m. with the National Anthem. Shortridge will be the first school at 6:36 p.m. and will be followed by Lapel, Cloverdale, Elwood Community, Tipton, Frankfort, Union County, Wabash, Lebanon, Frankton, Centerville, Muncie Southside and Yorktown.

A short break will take place at the midway point with Speedway opening up the second half at 8:36 p.m., followed by Noblesville at approximately 8:44 p.m. West Washington Jr/Sr, Cardinal Ritter, Kokomo, Hagerstown Jr/Sr, Brown County, Western Boone, Mooresville, Anderson, East Central, Monroe Central and Richmond fill out the remaining contestants.

Thornbury said this year’s NHS show is themed “High Definition.” It includes three songs: “Blue Shades” by Frank Tichelli, the traditional church hymn “Be Thou My Vision” and “I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash. The show will feature four giant high definition screens and visuals that will literally pop right off the screen and onto the field.

“It tells the same story musically and visually – from blurry to clear. It begins with a jazzy dirty tune and ends with in your face color.”

Twenty-five seniors comprise the 130-member Marching Millers.

“The marching band is bigger than last year,” Thornbury said. “We have a balanced band, we didn’t graduate many seniors.”

Other shows

The NHS Marching Millers will be the last performance (approximately 4:32 p.m.) at the Indiana State Fair Band Day competition on Aug. 2. Before the state fair, the Millers will perform free to the public at its annual ice cream social on July 31 at Hare Chevrolet Field. Ice cream will be served for a small fee starting at 6 p.m. The Marching Millers will perform its State Fair entry several times, starting around 6:30 p.m.
