Sophia Square’s Detour restaurant and bar to close

Staff Report

One of the owners of Detour: An American Grill said his sports bar is closing.

“We are in negotiations to sell Detour and are temporarily closed until further notice,” said co-owner Freddie Knipscheer. “There will be more information shortly.”
It has been a tough two years for the bar which occupies a prime location at the intersection of Main Street and the Monon Trail in downtown Carmel.

In 2013 the city prohibited Detour’s request to close 2nd Avenue for two outdoor events during the Indy 500 and Cinco de Mayo. The reason cited was numerous noise complaints from 2012.

“We would never have invested so much money (into Detour) if we knew this was going to happen,” said Detour co-owner Jeremiah Hamman at the time. “We moved here to be next to the Monon and take advantage of the location. We were asked here to help revitalize the Arts & Design District, but now … they don’t want to work with us.”

The owners had said they needed outdoor events to makeup for the dead time in winter when the bar gets hardly any customers.
