Applications are being accepted for the spring session of the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy that will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings from March 6 to May 22.
The Citizens Academy is a unique opportunity to learn firsthand how the Sheriff’s Office functions and to experience some of the training offered to deputies.
While the Academy does not bestow any law enforcement powers on participants, it does provide insight into how the Sheriff’s Office works in the community.
The Academy training covers many of the topics taught to new deputies, including law, patrol procedures, traffic stops, K9, physical tactics, impaired driving enforcement, 911 services, emergency driving, firearms, corrections, investigations and more.
Most sessions consist of classroom discussions along with demonstrations and hands-on practical experiences. Academy participants will also be offered opportunities to go on a “ride-along” with a deputy on service patrol as well as to observe the jail staff in action.
The Citizens Academy runs for 12 weeks with instruction provided by members of the Sheriff’s Office who are qualified in each area of expertise. After completion of the Academy, participants will receive a certificate during a graduation ceremony.
Applications may be obtained at the Sheriff’s Office or downloaded from the forms page of the Sheriff’s Office website and returned to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, 18100 Cumberland Road, Noblesville, IN 46060.

To attend, participants must:
• Be a minimum of 18 years of age (no upper age limit)
• Live or work in Hamilton County
• Have no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within one year prior to application (background checks will be performed)
• Commit to attend each session lasting approximately 3 hours
• Sign any required waivers and agreements
• Citizens from all walks of life are encouraged to apply
• There is no charge to attend the Citizen’s Academy
Class size is limited and applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A fall session will take place beginning in September and applications for that class may be submitted at any time.
