Flood waters destroy Open Doors Pantry in Westfield

0

The Open Doors Pantry in Westfield was flooded by a flash flood this morning that rose to three feet inside the building on Jersey Street. Alice and Joe Trentman, who run the pantry, and other workers and clients were inside the building when a wave of water came across the road from the adjacent creek and instantly flooded the building. They had to be rescued by the Westfield Fire Dept. Officials said almost everything was lost due to the flooding. All the food on the lower shelves, along with recently packed Spring Cleaning Baskets are ruined. Numerous freezers floated and tipped over, destroying all the frozen food in side.

Clean-up will begin tomorrow morning and volunteer help is needed. For more information, call Bruce A. Watson at 443-3101.
