Lightning causes fire responses

The Westfield Fire Dept. responded to multiple calls for lightning strikes on May 21. Fire Chief Joe Lyons said the calls increased in severity.

The first call was at 3:13 to 2000 E. 151st St. and when crews arrived they did not find any substantial damage. Crews found the residence at 16405 Joliet Rd. had been struck and some damage was done but there was not a fire during the second call. The third call was to 15650 Shining Spring Dr. where firemen arrived to find smoke coming from the home.

Lyons said the residence had been struck by lightning and compromised the corrugated stainless steel tubing which is used for the natural gas line. The ensuing fire damaged the structure but was quickly controlled. He estimated damage to be approximately $50,000.

Westfield was assisted by Carmel and Noblesville fire departments. Crews from Westfield later responded to Carmel and Noblesville to assist on other calls during the time frame that the same storm cell passed through those communities.
