After more than 45 years in the optometry business, Dr. James Kramer of Ossip Eyecare, in Zionsville, knows about eyes.

Since graduating from the Indiana University School of Optometry in 1966, Kramer has resided in Zionsville and serviced thousands of sets of eyes.

Last month, Kramer, who is only working part-time now, closed his office of more than 25 years and joined forces with the new Ossip Eyecare facility on Oak Street.

“It is strange to look across the street and see my old office with a ‘for lease’ sign in the window,” Kramer said, making light of the fact that he only had to move across Oak Street into his new office. “But the technology here is outstanding.”

Along with Dr. Shannon Pierce and Dr. Matthew Burkart, Kramer has helped to usher in new technology for Zionsville patients. One system that other Zionsville optometrists don’t have yet is a state-of-the-art retinal imaging system.

“I really came here for the technology of Ossip,” Kramer said.

The retinal display system takes an image of a patient’s seven layers of retinal tissue and can find things such as retinal melanomas, macular degeneration or blood vessel related eyes problems.

For Pierce, Ossip Eyecare building an office in Zionsville was an opportunity to break away from the administrative duties having her own office meant controlling.

“This place allows me to focus on patient care, which is what I’ve always wanted,” Pierce said.

Pierce had a solo office on Brendan Way for more than 20 years.

“It’s also about the direction our healthcare system is going,” Pierce said. “There’s power in numbers and in being in an office with other practitioners.”
