Darrin’s Coffee looking for a new home

Darrin Marion, owner of Darrin’s Coffee Company on Main Street, is in search of a new location. When he asked his landlord to extend his one-year renewable lease to five years, he learned that the space would no longer be available when the current lease expires in June.

“It’s a business decision,” said Barbara Jennings, speaking on behalf of her mother, who owns the building.

Two of the building’s storefronts open onto First Street with rental space that has been available for more than a year. A new facade and a lot of money were put into the space, but Jennings feels it hasn’t been rented because it doesn’t open onto Main Street. Plans call for the creation of an entrance on Main Street while maintaining the entrances on First Street, providing visibility and accessibility from both sides of the building.

“This is a business decision that makes the space viable,” Jennings said. She’s hopeful that Marion finds an ideal location for his business and that she finds the right person for her mother’s property.

One thing Marion appreciates about his current spot is the sentiment it holds for his family.

“My kids are working here,” he said. “This is as much theirs as it is mine.”

Marion started his business at the Zionsville Farmer’s Market and expanded to his current location in 2013. He would like his future location to have room for more seating and space to continue offering live music several days of the week. With his coffee being sold at Whole Foods in Indiana, he also would like to expand his roasting and recently added K-Cup production.

Ideally Marion would like to stay in downtown Zionsville.

“Main Street, that’s where it’s at,” he said. “I’ve been asking around everywhere.” But so far the right spot hasn’t appeared.

Marion will continue to sell his coffee at the Farmer’s Market through the summer.
