The whole family can spend the day enjoying outdoor festivities this Fourth of July at the INDYpendence Day Street Fest, put on by the Lintner Foundation.

The INDYpendence Day Fest is an all-day event that features live music, food, drinks and fun on Indianapolis’s Georgia Street. The festival started three years ago, when an Indy-area doctor decided to celebrate a huge milestone birthday his doctors told him he would never live to see: his 50th birthday.

Scott Lintner was diagnosed with leukemia in 1999 and was given eight to 12 years to live. Through years of determination and a life-saving bone marrow transplant, Lintner beat his cancer and eventually went into remission, roaring past his doctors’ prediction.

“As I got closer to turning to 50, I thought I’m going to have a big party for my friends,” Lintner said, adding that he was never supposed to see 50. That party turned into something bigger, as he was encouraged by his friends to pair up with an event planning company and make it into a fundraiser. In the first year, the festival raised over $50,000 for the St. Francis Hospital Patient Assistance Fund and The Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Indiana.

“The goal of the foundation is to provide funds to organizations or individuals for cancer care,” Lintner said. “It’s providing money to people who have cancer, or their families, because there’s a lot of things insurance won’t cover.”

For this Fourth of July, Lintner hopes that the turnout will be even bigger as to provide even more funds for cancer patients. “This year my personal goal is to get 10,000 people there,” he said.

And the event won’t be one to miss. Performances by Panic! At the Disco, New Politics, Standout Story, Bleeding Keys, Veseria and CoastL will begin at 3 p.m. and run until 10 p.m.

“It’s very family oriented,” Lintner said. “We have a lot of people come down and spend the whole day. People can bring lawn chairs, their food, beverages – it’s really a festival-party atmosphere.”
