Former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle of Zionsville pleaded guilty Aug. 19 to possessing child pornography and traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

A document released by federal prosecutors states that Fogle received child pornography between March 2011 and April 2015 depicting 12 minors, some as young as 13 or 14 years old. He obtained the images from Russell Taylor, former head of Fogle’s charity, who was arrested in April.

The document also states that Fogle traveled to hotels in New York City to pay two minors for sex between 2010 and 2013, and that he “repeatedly made travel plans in order to have his business trips coincide with his pursuit of commercial sex acts.”

The plea agreement does not specify how much time Fogle will spend in prison, but Fogle has agreed not to seek less than five years and prosecutors will not ask for more than about 12 years.

Fogle, 37, will be required to register as a sex offender, attend a program for treatment of sex offenders and pay $100,000 to the 14 minor victims to help them receive counseling, support and treatment.

The Fogle family released a statement to the media Aug. 19 expressing shock and disappointment in “Jared’s abhorrent criminal behavior.”

“We are very concerned for the wellbeing of those affected by his conduct,” it stated. “At the same time, we are gratified that Jared is accepting responsibility for what he has done by agreeing to plea [sic]guilty to the charges filed today and by volunteering to make restitution to the victims.”

Fogle’s wife, Katie, issued a statement on Aug. 19 stating she will file for divorce.

Fogle rose to fame after losing a significant amount of weight by eating Subway sandwiches and exercising. He served as the pitchman for Subway until earlier this year, when the sandwich chain cut ties with him.

Subway issued a statement regarding Fogle on its Twitter account on Aug. 18.

“We no longer have a relationship with Jared and have no further comment,” it stated.
