Temporary traffic light planned in Boone County

The Indiana Department of Transportation announced Thursday its traffic crews will begin installing a temporary signal today as part of a larger effort to ensure the safe and orderly flow of traffic at U.S. 52 and State Road 47 near Thorntown.

“INDOT is committed to bringing every available resource to bear with regard to this situation, and in an effort to ensure safety, we’ll continue to coordinate with local officials, law enforcement and our field experts to monitor the detour and make sure it is as safe as possible for Hoosier motorists,” said INDOT Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson.

I-65 northbound was closed Aug. 7 for safety reasons as a result of ongoing construction. Since then, INDOT traffic experts have been monitoring the unplanned detour over U.S. 52, State Road 28 and U.S. 231 and making it as safe as possible.

U.S. 52 and State Road 47 traffic should expect short delays as traffic crews replace the preexisting flashers with the temporary signal. Law enforcement will be assisting during installation with brief slowdowns or stoppages of traffic.

Once the signal is activated, drivers should watch for other vehicles as they get accustomed to the new traffic pattern. INDOT is installing warning signs and additional rumble strips to provide advance warning for the temporary signal, and will continue to monitor crashes and traffic flow for further adjustments.

In addition, State Road 47 traffic should make sure that trucks and other heavy highway traffic stop fully before proceeding through the intersection on green.

“We are tremendously appreciative of the assistance from law enforcement, and the patience and understanding of the motoring public,” Commissioner Hendrickson said. “We are working diligently to safely reopen I-65 northbound as quickly as possible.”
