Opinion: Back to you, Mrs. Clinton

With Vice President Joe Biden announcing last week he would not pursue the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, our original theory actually went down the drain. We had talked on more than one occasion about how we thought the vice president would wait to see how Hillary Rodman Clinton (D-N.Y.) would fare after the conclusion of the e-mail server investigation, likely in February, before he would announce. Shows what we know. Regardless, we are disappointed by his decision, because we believed him to be a more-worthy challenger to Clinton than Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will turn out to be in the long run. But just as there is scant difference between Democrats and Republicans these days, we believe that is the case with Clinton and Sanders. … Meanwhile, didn’t you used to be the serious challenger to Republican Donald Trump’s candidacy, Carly Fiorina?

Hearty congratulations to Michael and Debbie Bourgerie, owners of the delightful Rosie’s Place on the Noblesville square. Rosie’s is celebrating its fifth anniversary. In the restaurant industry, which litters the roadside with so many “can’t-miss” and “great” ideas, this eatery obviously is the antithesis. Back in 2010, the nation was only beginning to emerge from the recession, yet the Bourgeries has this feeling that the time was right. So successful has Rosie’s been that a sister restaurant by the same name has opened in Zionsville. Well played, folks!

We want to thank El Nino in advance for this, what with winter expected to be wetter but warmer this time around, but we cannot do that. Because U.S. production of natural gas has increased the last five years, Citizens Energy Group has said Westfield’s natural-gas bills will be 28 percent lower than those of last winter. The average consumer bill for November through March last year was $717, and it is expected to drop to about $519. With production up, prices go down on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the utility said. We’ll take it!

The Fishers Department of Fire and Emergency Services has received a statewide award and $1,000 for its development of a health-and-safety program for its staff. Recognized by The Leadership in Fitness Excellence, or L.I.F.E., and co-presented by the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association and Public Safety Medical, the award was made during a recent ceremony. The money is earmarked for the continued efforts of the program. This is among the types of honors that certainly move Fishers forward, and we congratulate the team on its achievement.

This shouldn’t be a necessary annual activity, but as long as there are couldn’t-care-less people in our midst, sadly it has to happen. So, the Geist Lake Coalition recently gathered for its fall Geist Cleanup Day. Volunteers met at Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill to help clean up around the reservoir and neighborhoods in the area. Volunteers were provided with trash bags. If the dingbats that leave the detritus for others to gather and toss simply took it upon themselves to do so, the area would stay clean. Thank you, volunteers.

There is a lot of back and forth going on in Zionsville about the potential for a traffic light at Oak and First streets in the Village. We’re probably in the vast minority on this, but based on our travels in and around that area the light is needed.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading about Zionsville resident Don Knebel in today’s paper. He shares compelling stories in his new book, Flushed with Curiosity, compiled from his Current columns.
