Carmel launches ‘Caffeine Trail’ to highlight local cafes

The City of Carmel is unveiling a new and tasty attraction, shining the spotlight on local shops and cafés offering gourmet coffees and teas with a new Carmel Caffeine Trail. Tourists, visitors and local residents can now look to the Caffeine Trail to see where they can get a pour-over coffee, an espresso, a loose-leaf cup of tea and other treats found in the growing number small shops around Carmel.

The Caffeine Trail will officially be launched on Saturday, January 9, at the IU Health North Second Saturday Gallery Walk in the Arts & Design District, featuring free “cupping” demonstrations by Hubbard & Cravens and special offerings of free samples from local vendors – coffee, tea and hot chocolate – in various locations along the Gallery Walk. Cuppings will be presented hourly at 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m. at 111 W. Main, Suite 115, next to Joe’s Butcher Shop. Door prizes will be awarded at each cupping.

“Carmel has long celebrated many genres of art in a variety of ways, from the performing arts at The Palladium to the art of design at the Indiana Design Center. We also embrace the visual, culinary and graphic arts in the Arts & Design District,” said Nancy Heck, Director of Community Relations and Economic Development. “It’s time to celebrate the art of caffeine in our city. There is an increasing interest in the culinary arts across the nation and here in Carmel, we have a number of restaurants and cafés dedicated to serving up cups of coffee, espresso, latte or freshly brewed tea that are works of art.”

The city plans to publicize the Caffeine Trail in a variety of ways, hoping that it becomes one more reason for visitors to come and spend time experiencing all that Carmel has to offer.

Specific vendors were selected for the Caffeine Trail because they offer a barista on staff or the ability to operate like a barista (using professional equipment) to make espressos, lattes and other drinks. Many also feature locally roasted beans like those produced by Hubbard & Cravens or small batch independent coffees from roasters across the U.S. Carmel also offers tea lovers a special treat at Tina’s Traditional Old English Tea Room in the Arts & Design District. The majority of coffee shops, such as Soho Café & Gallery on the Monon Trail, also offer a variety of loose leaf teas.

Like the wine trails in California and the bourbon trails in Kentucky, the Caffeine Trail is just one more reason to visit, stay and play in Carmel.
