Noblesville Schools get last year’s grades

The Indiana Dept. of Education has released its grades for the 2014-15 school year with data that shows most schools received the same grades they received in the 2013-14 school year.

These results came after the Indiana State Board of Education voted at its January business meeting to approve the grades as either the same or better after big drops in ISTEP+ standardized testing scores, the result of an attempt by the state to make the testing more challenging.

Yet, the state made changes via SB 200 “to ensure that no school is penalized by lower ISTEP+ scores during the state’s transition to more rigorous college- and career-ready academic standards,” according the ISBOE website, after test results came back significantly lower than the previous year for many schools. In turn, the state also passed HB 1003, keeping ISTEP+ scores from hurting performance evaluations of teachers and educators.

For Noblesville Schools, it’s all As across the board again for its high school, two middle schools and seven elementary schools.

But this year, they’re not the only district in Hamilton Co. to do so.

Carmel Clay Schools – who would have had all As in the 2013-14 grading if not for Carmel Middle School’s B grade – also received all As in its 15 schools. Of Carmel Clay Schools’ 14 ISTEP-tested schools, there was an average 20.28 percent drop in overall scores. In 2013-2014, schools had an average 75.27 percent passing rate between them. In 2014-2015, schools had an average 54.99 percent passing rate between them.

“We are very proud of our students for all of their academic and extra-curricular achievements.. While we are celebrating this distinction, we also recognize school grades are based on students’ performance on ISTEP only, making it a measure of student achievement on one particular day,” said Amy Dudley, Assistant Supt. of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment at Carmel Clay Schools. “Last year, Carmel Middle School missed earning an ‘A’ grade by 0.02 percent. This year, Carmel Middle School earned an ‘A’ grade by 0.03 percent. This small change is most likely attributed to one or two students moving from typical growth to high growth.”

Of Noblesville Schools’ nine ISTEP-tested schools, there was an average 51.56 percent drop in overall scores. In 2013-2014, schools had an average 73.88 percent passing rate between them. In 2014-2015, schools had an average 22.32 percent passing rate between them.

Hamilton Southeastern Schools saw improvements, too. With 18 As and two Bs last year, the district has just one B this year. Cumberland Road Elementary increased its grade, while Sand Creek Intermediate kept its B.

Other public school districts in Hamilton Co. kept the exact same grades, including Hamilton Heights School Corp., Sheridan Community Schools and Westfield-Washington Schools.

For private schools, Noblesville’s Diocese of Lafayette Catholic Schools, which include Guerin Catholic High School and Our Lady of Grace Catholic School, kept their A grades, while Legacy Christian School, an independent private school, increased its grade from a B to an A.
