Telamon Corporation has announced that its energy solutions division has signed a contract with the City of Carmel to develop a solar power system at two locations in the city.
Telamon is a Carmel-based $800 million company with 1,400 employees worldwide. It started in 1985 as a telecommunications company but has branched out into other areas, including energy solutions.
Construction is expected to start in August and conclude in December on the two solar arrays. Both are for water services. One is at 106th Street and Gray Road and the other is on Hazel Dell Parkway just north of the city’s wastewater treatment facility.
The 1.08 MW DC solar power system can produce up to 1.54 million kilowatt hours of energy a year to power the water plants. The system will offset 1,065 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
“Renewable energy, such as solar, is a better energy source because we don’t have to pay other countries to get it, and even more importantly, it will help keep our air clean and reduce the cost and suffering of those with lung diseases,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said in a statement. “In this case, because we can reduce the amount of electricity we buy, our rate of return on our investment is competitive, so it is also a good financial investment for our taxpayers.”
Telamon has partnered with Inovateus Solar based out of South Bend on this project.
“Telamon is excited to serve as the developer and construction administrator of this project,” said Reggie Henderson, vice president and general manager of Telamon Energy Solutions in a statement. “We look forward to helping the City of Carmel save approximately $4.4 million over the course of 25 years while also promoting the importance of clean energy within the city’s environment.”
