“I’m a first-generation law enforcement officer, so this is new for all of us, and my family is really supportive, so I think they really enjoyed (the ceremony) and appreciated it,” Plummer said.

Plummer, 22, grew up in Indianapolis with her parents and younger sister. She has always been interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.

“When I was really young, my family experienced some violence, and I think that’s what led me to policing,” Plummer said.

She graduated from IUPUI in December 2015 with a degree in public safety management. While there, she participated in the cadet program offered at all IU campuses. As a cadet, she attended school full time and shadowed the part-time officers of the IUPUI Police Dept. who had already completed the Indiana Law Academy. She spent two years as a cadet and then went to the academy during the summer of 2015.

Plummer credits the academy with helping her land a job at ZPD.

“(The academy) already has helped me a lot,” she said. “Now, when they hired me, I was able to basically jump right into department training.”

Plummer is already patrolling the streets with other ZPD officers, and she’s also attending graduate school. She said she will be working on her own once she completes field training.

“I’ve already learned a lot in my first couple weeks,” Plummer said. “I’m excited to be here in Zionsville and pursue my career here.”
