Supreme Court vacancy – Judge Matthew C. Kincaid of Boone Superior Court 1 is among 21 people who have applied to succeed Justice Robert Rucker on the Indiana Supreme Court. Rucker will retire this spring after 26 years on the bench. Initial candidate interviews are taking place March 20 to 22 with semifinalists interviewed April 17 to 19. Gov. Eric Holcomb will select the next justice from three finalists.
BZA appointment – The Zionsville Town Council on March 6 voted to appoint Steve Mundy, a former town councilor, to the Zionsville Board of Zoning Appeals. The BZA’s next meeting is 6:30 p.m. March 14.
Poetry contest – The Zionsville Cultural District announces the first-ever Step-On-Us Sidewalk Poetry Contest. Winning poems will be stamped into a Village sidewalk for all villagers and visitors to see for years to come. Entry is $5 for youth and $10 for adults. Entries are due by March 30. College fair – The Greater Indianapolis Northside College Fair will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on March 15 at 502 East Event Centre in Carmel. More than 100 schools will be represented at this free event, and students in all grade levels are welcome to attend. Students should go to gotocollegefairs.com to pre-register for this event. By doing so they will be able to generate a unique barcode that allows them to easily share their information with colleges and maximize their time at the fair.
Launch successful – The 40 mice sent into space to study bone healing have reached the International Space Station. IU School of Medicine Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Melissa Kacena of Zionsville is one of the leaders of the project. Eagle Madness – The Zionsville Athletic Booster Club presents Eagle Madness from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. on March 18 at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, corner of 344 and 700 E. This fundraiser is for adults 21 and older and benefits athletic programs at Zionsville schools. Lunch and Learn On the Road – Boone County Senior Services announces the 2017 lineup for Lunch and Learn On the Road. Lunch and Learn On the Road is for people age 60 and over who would like to travel with us by motor coach to see different parts of our state and learn something new, plus enjoy a special meal. The award honors Indiana authors – those born in Indiana or who lived in Indiana five consecutive years – whose work has made, or has the potential to make, a lasting public impact. Round Up grants awarded – Boone REMC’s Operation Round Up board of trustees recently awarded several grants. The Caring Center received $4,000 for replacing computer equipment. Western Boone Little League received $5,000 to replace fencing at Thorntown League Park. Zachary Goebel of Boy Scout Troop 804 received $346 to help fund his Eagle Scout project. Camp scholarship – a scholarship is available for a 5th or 6th grader who wants to attend the 2017 Indiana Conservation Officer Organization Karl E. Kelley Memorial Youth Camp in June. Electronics recycling – An electronics recycling drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 22 at University High School, 2825 W. 116th St. Phones, computers, printers, tablets, cables, and more are welcome. Tube TV’s with a CRT screen have an additional $10 charge.
Mayor’s Night In – Mayor Tim Haak and the Town of Zionsville staff and department heads want to hear from you. Mayor’s Night In will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 26 at Zionsville Town Hall. This is a chance to hear about the current happenings in Zionsville, to ask questions and to connect with Town officials. Following a brief presentation, there will be a Q&A session. All residents, neighborhood associations and businesses are invited to attend.
New scholarship program – Indiana Members Foundation, the charitable arm of Indiana Members Credit Union, announces the new Robert E. Martin Collegiate Scholarship Program, available to college students that are members of Indiana Members Credit Union. Up to twenty-five $1,000 scholarships will be offered. Meeting dates – The Boone County Solid Waste Management District Board meeting dates for 2017 have been announced. All meetings begin at 8:30 a.m. and are held at the County Annex Building, 116 W. Washington St., Room 105, Lebanon. The meeting dates are May 18, July 20, Sept. 21 and Nov. 16.
