For Dr. Annie Esquivel, there are three reasons she chose to specialize in asthma and allergies.
“Before I became a doctor, I was a middle school teacher,” said Esquivel, who recently opened a Family Allergy & Asthma office in Zionsville. “In this specialty, I do a lot of teaching. It is so important for people with asthma to understand how to use their inhaler, or for those with food allergies to know how to read labels and treat their symptoms. I enjoy educating patients about their conditions to help them get the best care possible.”
The second reason is there are excellent treatments for allergies and asthma.
“Therefore, working as an allergist is very rewarding,” she said. “On a very regular basis, I see patients in follow-up who are grateful that they can breathe easier, do sports, play outside, pet a dog, things that used to cause symptoms. It’s wonderful to have reliable testing and treatments to help patients.”
The third is the continuity of care in this specialty.
“I get to see children and adults, which often means I care for multiple family members,” she said. “I love getting to know the whole family.”
Esquivel, a Zionsville resident, said the new office, 4400 Weston Pointe Dr., Suite 150, is in her neighborhood.
“I think it’s a very convenient location, just off I-65, up Michigan Road,” Esquivel said. “We always try to find locations with ample parking that are easy for patients to access. Our staff has done a great job making the office a warm, comforting environment. They actually put up some of my husband’s photography on the walls.”
Esquivel and her husband and three children moved to Zionsville from Madison, Wis., where she did an allergy/immunology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. Esquivel, a 1999 Plainfield High School graduate, previously lived in downtown Indianapolis during medical school and residency.
Esquivel said she hopes being fluent in Spanish will boost the practice.
“When I was in residency, I worked at a clinic in Indianapolis that served a large population of Spanish-speakers, and I truly enjoyed it,” Esquivel said. “I would love the opportunity to use my Spanish at the new office in Zionsville.”
