5 big ideas for small spaces

Thoughtful design is always important, but especially in small spaces where every inch, every corner and every vertical space commands careful attention. Here are five ideas for big living in small spaces:

  1. Go vertical!: Plant tall/slender items that consume little horizontal space. Think feather reed grasses, columnar boxwood, columnar barberry, bamboo and skyrocket junipers.
  2. Employ the walls: Most courtyards are hugged by a few walls or fence structure. Plant climbing vines (clematis for sunny and climbing hydrangea for shade), install classy wall art or an elegant wall mounted water feature. Warning, it’s a lot easier to find tacky, than classy! Appoint the fence structure with horizontal planking, sleek trim and a cap, then stain it espresso for a blast of elegance.
  3. Think linear: Make the most of abbreviated spaces with straight lines on patios to stretch patio flooring far into the corners. Squeeze compact outdoor furniture to the patio edges, which allows for maximum use of living space. I love curves “in all the right places,” but they eat into valuable real estate.
  4. Built-ins are smart space-savers: Built in grills that disguise storage and double as counter gathering spots, slender stone sitting walls consume less space than formal furniture, deep stairs double as impromptu seating, slim rectangular fire/water features hugged against walls offer drama as the heat/sound echoes around the space.
  5. Be bold with colors in patio furniture cushions, pillows and rugs for a lively vibe.

Regardless of the size of your outdoor living space, these brilliant strategies are always relevant and can serve to elevate your outdoor living experience!
