Thirty-two recently graduated Westfield High School seniors received the state’s first ever multilingual proficiency award. The Indiana Dept. of Education granted the award to students with a functional level of proficiency in both English and one or more other languages.
Naomi Henn was one of the dozens who was recognized for the award.
“I was honestly so excited when I found out I received the award. It was so rewarding to know that working so hard in and out of class to get better at my language skills really paid off,” Henn said. “I am thrilled to be able to say I’m proficient in Spanish, and I hope I can use the certificate to continue learning and growing in my professional life.”
WHS Spanish teacher Jen Hasler-Troutman credits achievements with students ongoing curiosity.
“These students have worked diligently. I am thrilled that they have earned this recognition,” Hasler-Troutman said. “What I admire most about them is their ability to remain curious and open to learning more about languages and cultures. I am eager to see how our students continue to use their language proficiency and cultural awareness throughout their lives.”
According to a press release sent to Current, Jennifer Mccormick, the state’s superintendent of public instruction stated she knows the students selected will accomplish great things.
“We live in a world where opportunities to prepare our students for success on a global level give them an edge,” McCormick stated. “I am proud of these students for their hard work to receive this certificate. If their commitment to earning this is reflective of their approach to life, I know they will go on to accomplish great things.”
The Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is an award made by any participating school district, charter or other nonpublic accredited high school. Student transcripts must show they have attained a higher level of proficiency in their respective language. The certificate will confirm the attainment of proficiency in at least two languages by students for their employers and universities.
