Bark for Life has been transformed into a Halloween-themed event.

The Howl-a-Ween Bark for Life is set for Oct. 28 at Creekside Corporate Park in Zionsville. Registration begins at 9 a.m. This is the second time the event has been held in Zionsville.

“The event was in coordination with the Zionsville Fall Festival last year, but due to some staff changes (at American Cancer Society) was postponed to a Halloween- themed event,” said Tatijana Marsee, community development manager for the North Central Region of the American Cancer Society.  “We found that people are always searching for a fun way to get their whole family involved in holiday festivities. Our goal is to have at least 50 people there and to raise a couple thousand dollars to support the American Cancer Society’s programs. Of course, we are happy with any donations and are excited to offer an opportunity to bring awareness to the fight against cancer.”

The American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life is a fundraising event that honors the care-giving qualities of canine best friends. It presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companions and contribute to cancer cures through the mission of the American Cancer Society.

The event allows participants and their dogs to celebrate human and canine cancer survivors, honor those that have been lost to cancer and to fight back against the disease.

Costume contests for children and canines are set for 9:30 a.m. The dog walk opening ceremony is at 10 a.m., followed by the noncompetitive walk. There are family friendly activities from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. A silent auction begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m.

Marsee said participants can enter as a team or as individuals. Cost is $20 per dog and $5 for each additional dog in the family. Humans are admitted free.

“The idea is that the teams will raise money prior to the event, and the event will serve as a final fundraiser as well as mainly a celebration,” Marsee said. “All the funds raised on this day will go back to the American Cancer Society. We have partnered with the Humane Society of Boone County for an adoption event. We understand that cancer doesn’t just take humans. And so, for those that are looking to bring another family member into their homes, we will have animals at the event ready to be adopted or just loved on.”
