Square Donuts in Carmel is aiming to reopen its doors Dec. 1.

A sign on the door made the announcement, although officials were not available for an interview as of Oct. 20.

The shop closed in August after the Indiana State Health Dept. found four critical violations at the Square Donuts bakery in Indianapolis. It found “an extremely heavy gnat infestation” and other violations. The bakery received clearance to resume operations Aug. 18.

The Marion County Public Health Dept. deactivated Square Donuts’ license Sept. 6 at the bakery’s request, according to Curt Brantingham, a spokesman for the department. He said Square Donuts stated that it was not in operation at that time.

“We would reinspect them to reopen them,” Brantingham said. “As long as they were in compliance they could reactivate their license. It would take about a week to schedule. However, no requests for reopening have been made.”

An employee at the Square Donuts in Terre Haute said that Square Donuts plans to reopen its Carmel, Fishers and Indianapolis locations soon and that a new Square Donuts is planned at Fall Creek Road and College Avenue in Indianapolis. Brantingham said that the Marion County Health Dept. has not received plans for the new site yet.

“This is in our jurisdiction and there was some discussion at the beginning of the year that they were planning to open at that location,” Brantingham said. “This facility would need to go through a plan review and inspection. They have not contacted us about opening in a new location. No plans have been submitted to our office. There is a permit filed with the city of Indianapolis but no other developments or applications.”
