Zionsville school board approves 2018 budget, reviews rising enrollment

The Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees met Oct. 23 to approve the 2018 budget, review district enrollment and hear a presentation from the Zionsville Century Club.

What happened: The board approved the 2018 budget.

What it means: The budget that ZCS will submit to the Dept. of Local Government finance for review tops out at $90.2 million with a 1.68 tax rate. ZCS Chief Financial Officer Mike Shafer said that the district expects DLGF to approve the ZCS budget at $80 million with a tax rate of approximately $1.30, leaving it essentially unchanged from the current rate.

What’s next: The DLGF will review the budget.

 

What happened: ZCS Chief Operations Officer Rebecca Coffman presented the annual student enrollment report.

What it means: ZCS enrollment has increased by 191 students since last year, with the total number of students at 6,868. Since the 2016 report, 303 students moved out of the district and 501 moved into it. No core classes have more than 35 students.

 

What happened: Duane Canfield of the Zionsville Century Club gave a presentation about the organization’s $10,400 gift to the Zionsville Community High School Best Buddies program.

What it means: The Century Club meets quarterly to select a program to support with donations from its members. Most recently it selected Best Buddies, a club that promotes friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
