Carmel Road Racing Group has made major changes to this year’s Carmel Marathon. The race will take place March 31, which is earlier than previous years.

“We have a brand new date,” Race Director Todd Oliver said. “We chose it to become the first major Midwestern marathon of the year. There are roughly seven or eight major marathons in the Midwest. In the past we were always in the middle of those eight major ones. Now, we are the very first one.”

Oliver said registration is up 70 percent from last year and attributes it to the date change. The race also has a new course.

“We have a whole new marathon and half-marathon course,” Oliver said. “The only thing that has stayed the same from last year to this is the start and finish line at The Palladium. The showcasing of Main Street to the last mile of the race is the exact same as last year. Other than that, the entire course has been changed.”

The race has participants registered from 43 states, a new record. It will bring many visitors to the Carmel area and many spectators watching from the sidelines.

“Now, the marathon and the half-marathon people will all run together for the first 13 miles,” Oliver said. “When we start, we come down Range Line Road south, so all of those parking lots will be great spectator areas. You can go there and park and see all these runners running by you. They’ll all be by you in 20 to 30 minutes. That’s something we’ve never had before.”

The start time has been moved from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. to allow for more daylight. For more, visit carmelroadracinggroup.com.
