Letter: Education trail is out of this world

0

Editor,

I was out west in Idaho in Sun Valley walking on a paved public trail. On the trail I came across a sun painted on the trail. It was about 2 feet in diameter and was marked SUN. About 20 yards further there was Mercury. A few steps beyond that was Earth and so on. Finally, about three-fourths of a mile down the trail was Pluto. It showed our entire solar system, and they were all correctly spaced!

There weren’t many people on the trail that day; however, those of us who saw it were quite amazed at the distances between our planets. What a great idea, as people could even gauge how far they were planning on walking that day.  “Let’s walk to Pluto!”

What a great learning experience just simply walking down the trail, and what a nice project it would be for a grade school. Hopefully, Orchard Park (that’s where my son attends) could make this happen and learn about our solar system.
