The second ZGravy Chase run/walk  took place Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22. It was a benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County.

Rob Schein, board president for Boys & Girls Club of Boone County, created the holiday  race after driving to Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving for many years to participate in the Drumstick Dash.

“He came up with this idea last year to be able to stay closer to home,” said Katie Reasoner, resource development director for BGCBC.

More than 2,200 people participated in either the 2-mile or 4.4-mile loop. Both started and finished on the cobblestone brick street in downtown Zionsville.

“This new holiday tradition has been embraced by the community,” Schein said.

The race raised more than $55,000, which the club will use to support programming and operations costs and provide aid for membership fees.

In the 2-mile division, William Pitts was the first male  to cross the finish line, followed by the female winner, Chloe Wilson. Mark Weghorst and Sydney Meyers were the respective male and female winners for the 4.4-mile course.

The Boys & Girls Club of Boone County provides summertime and after-school care for youth and teens across the county.

In October, the Lebanon Area Boys & Girls Club and the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville merged to form the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County, which oversees separate club locations in Lebanon, Whitestown and Zionsville. Between the clubs, more than 450 kids attend after-school programming each day. In addition to daily programming, the clubs offer sports leagues, summer camps and community programs.

“Our sponsors are the key to the success of this event,” Schein said. “Their support for the ZGravy Chase makes a direct impact on the youth in Boone County.”

The event’s main sponsor is Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  Additional sponsors are listed at racemaker.org/event/z-gravy-chase.
