Whitestown parks’ activities to move outdoors next month

Since 2017, the Whitestown Parks and Recreation has encouraged families and kids to get outside and play through its Recreation on Wheels program.

“We take a bunch of outdoor toys and games to different green spaces or parks around the community to get families outdoors and to be active together,” said Sarah Burns, event coordinator. “We’re really trying to get kids out from in front of the screens and have them enjoy family time in an active manner.”

During the winter months, activities are held indoors. Starting in mid-April, the activities are moved outside to different parks in the Whitestown area.

“We really want to highlight all of our parks so residents can enjoy them,” Burns said.

Activities include games and sports for all activity levels and ages.

“We have corn hole, ladder golf, all different kinds of balls, hula hoops and jump ropes,” Burns said. “I set up relay races for the kids which are really popular. We’ll also be getting some new toys this year. We’ve got stuff for teeny, tiny kids all the way up to adults.”

Each year, Whitestown Parks and Recreation evaluates what activities were successful in the past and looks at new popular toys to keep offerings fresh.

“We take a look at what’s coming out and what’s popular,” Burns said.  “Then, we look at what toys were used during the events the most. Then, we base our decision on what we buy on that.”

Each week, the department will load up a trailer and take the equipment to a Whitestown park or open green space. The schedule will change each week to allow busy families time during the day, evening and weekend to take advantage of the free program.
