Fishers resident Vanessa Coles will start her tenure as Fortune Academy’s head of school June 1. Fortune Academy serves students in grades first through 12th with diagnosed language-based learning differences and is a leader in research-based education. It is at 5626 Lawton Loop East Dr., Lawrence.

Previously, Coles served as the academy’s Lower School Division head for the past 2 1/2 years. She was appointed to her new position by the board of trustees. She succeeds Janet George, who established the academy in 2002.

Coles said it is important that even with the staffing transition, the culture of the school doesn’t change.

“I am both humbled and honored to carry on the mission that was set forth by our founders to provide transformative education to students with language-learning differences,” she stated. “Every student deserves a classroom environment that allows them to thrive. I am committed to serving the students and staff so that, together, we can reach our full potential.”

Coles started her career in Warren Township, teaching general education elementary students with learning differences as an inclusionary teacher.

“I always had a heart for students who just needed a different approach to teaching. They just needed a different way to unlock their abilities,” she said.

After her time in Warren Township, she taught fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade at Fortune Academy before being named the Lower School Division head.
