Nathan Doyle always dreamed of transforming his brewery into more than just another pub. It became a step closer to reality in April when the brewery’s back patio received a free renovation.
“I’ve wanted a stage here since we started this business, and Hoosier Landscape Group was able to give us that, which really allows us to step up the music that we have and the parties and shows that we do,” Doyle said.
In December 2018, Doyle partnered with his friend, Travis Tetrault, owner of Hoosier Landscape Group, to remodel the bar’s back patio to cater to more guests and showcase more artists. The patio work was completed April 20.
“(Tetrault has) been in business for several years and serves a lot of the Carmel community, but he didn’t have anything to show off what he can do,” Doyle said. “We had the blank-slate patio area and we thought it would be beneficial for everyone.”
However, Union Brewing is part of Monon Square, an 8.7-acre strip mall recently purchased by the City of Carmel to be redeveloped into mixed-use buildings and a large parking garage. Doyle knows the brewery’s home will likely be torn down in the coming years.
“I know that it’s inevitable,” he said. “This little strip mall is old and it needs some work. I can see why they don’t want to invest in fixing it up and tearing it out.”
However, the patio makeover is already bringing in more patrons. Tetrault also utilizes the space for business meetings and showcases, and he has already booked new clients.
“It’s just like-minded guys getting together and seeing the potential of the benefits for both businesses and going for it,” Doyle said.
Tetrault said he hopes to rebuild along the Monon after the new building is in place and that it made sense to partner with Union Brewing now.
“We just wanted to have a small little outside promotional area for ourselves that we can use as an outdoor home show, basically,” Tetrault said. “With landscaping, things change all the time, so two to three years of an outdoor space is going to need to change if I’m going to promote it somewhere different so it just made sense.”
Doyle plans to find an interim spot for the brewery when Monon Square goes under construction, but he wants to return to the same location when the new building is complete.
Doyle was inspired to launch a brewery because he felt there was a lack of local space available in a relaxing environment. He built and opened Union Brewing Co. in 2012. Union Brewing is one of only a dozen breweries in the nation that specializes in cask-conditioned beer, which is served warmer, unfiltered and unpasteurized.
