Student found with gun in bag at Lawrence Central

A Lawrence Central High School student was found with a gun after arriving late to school the morning of Aug. 15.

Principal Franklyn Bush sent a letter to parents after the incident informing them on what happened. In the letter, it was stated the student was immediately searched upon arriving due to exhibiting what Bush writes as “erratic behavior suggestive of being under the influence.” When the student was searched, a weapon was uncovered in the bag. The search occurred before the student was in the main entry to the building. The letter stated there was no point where an eminent threat was presented to students or staff.

“Administration and the Lawrence Police Dept. are working to determine the source and intent of the weapon. We will then proceed in following with the district’s established conduct policies around weapons on school property, and take this situation very seriously,” Bush wrote in the letter.
