Melt the Trail returns

The sixth annual Melt the Trail 5K, presented by Centier Bank, will be at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 22 at Grand Junction Brewing Co., 1189 E. 181st St.

“The idea behind the event originally was to highlight that Westfield keeps their trails open year-round,” said Kelley Wells, community events coordinator for Westfield Welcome. “For safety, roads are a priority, but our public works crew does a great job of keeping our trails open all year round.”

The most significant change to the event this year is the route.

“Traditionally, we held it at Grand Park up until this year, but since we have two other races that we run there, we thought it would be fun to change it up this year,” Wells said. “We decided to partner with Grand Junction Taproom. They have a great venue for it, so we’re going to start at the taproom and run up the Monon Trail to Grand Park.

“Runners will turn around, come back, and then we’ll have some post-race activities at the taproom.”

Post-race activities and offerings include music, games, food and beverages.

“Grand Junction is going to have some music, and they’re going to have some food provided with your race entry,” Wells said. “You get a free drink ticket that you can use for a beer or a soda. They will also have some arcade games and board games.”

Awards will be given following the race.

“We offer prizes for the first and second male and female finishers in each age group,” Wells said. “We also offer another prize to the overall male and female finisher.”

The cost to register varies by date. To receive a T-shirt, the deadline is Feb. 9. Shirts are not guaranteed after that date. To register, visit westfieldwelcome.com/event/melt-the-trail.
