HSE Board approves addition of some full-day kindergarten classes

FISHERS — As a result of additional grant money available from the state, Hamilton Southeastern Schools will offer a limited number of full-day kindergarten sections for the 2011-12 school year. State grants do not cover the entire cost so parents will make-up the difference by paying $1,700 per child for the year.  Because classroom space is tight, the district must limit full-day kindergarten to two classes in each elementary. A lottery will determine the 50 students who will attend full-day classes in each building. Those interested in being part of the lottery for this opportunity must have enrolled their child in their neighborhood school first and then fill out and submit the lottery registration form before the end of the day June 6, 2011.

The Board of School Trustees approved the initiative at Friday morning’s meeting.

Dr. Brian Smith, superintendent said, “Even with limited classroom space, this plan still provides full-day kindergarten to about half of our kindergarten enrollment.”

The full-day program will be all-day, every day; and students will be held accountable for their attendance and participation on a full-day basis. Payment options include monthly, by semester or annually at the beginning of the school year. A non-refundable deposit of $190 is due by June 17 for a child selected for full-day kindergarten through the lottery.  More information will be sent to families once full-day kindergarten students have been determined.

Parents who enrolled their child for kindergarten during the Kindergarten Round Up window will receive a letter in the U.S. Mail with details for registering for the lottery.

Parents interested in the full-day program but who have not enrolled their child in kindergarten at a Hamilton Southeastern elementary school must do the following by the end of the day June 6:

  • First, register for kindergarten in person at the school serving their neighborhood. Requirements and school attendance boundary maps are on the HSE web site (www.hse.k12.in.us). Under Quick Links, click on “Enrollment Information” and then click on “Enroll in Elementary Schools.”
  • After registering for kindergarten, parents will receive and be able to submit a registration form for the full-day kindergarten lottery in that school. Again, those two steps must be completed in that order by June 6, 2011.

With two sections of full-day K in each elementary in addition to regular half-day sessions, space will not be available for the YMCA K Plus program within HSE school buildings next year. HSE is working with the YMCA to find an off-campus facility where it can offer K Plus sessions. HSE will provide transportation for its students who participate in the off-campus YMCA K Plus program.  The before-and after-school YMCA program will continue at each elementary.
