Homes needed for dogs abandoned for days in Carmel storage unit

NOBLESVILLE — Lieutenant Amy Stein with the Carmel Police Department is currently investigating the abandonment of two pit bulls at Public Storage located at 1099 N. Rangeline Road. On May 10th, an employee of Public Storage reported seeing a couple put the dogs into the unit and that she told them they could not do this. They indicated they would be right back for the dogs.

The employee’s shift ended, so the next morning she checked the log and saw they did not access the facility again. She went to the unit and could hear the dogs moving around. She contacted the couple who said they would be returning for the dogs that day, but they did not. The police were contacted on May 15th that the dogs had been abandoned in the unit and they were removed and brought to the Humane Society for Hamilton County. Both dogs were severely emaciated and in poor health.

“The dogs were found with no food or water or empty bowls showing they had been left anything and their crates were disgusting,” stated Lieutenant Stein. “We pulled the security footage. The dogs were in the facility over multiple days, the primary suspect is shown walking them once or so a day.”

The two Pit Bulls, now named Athena and Apollo, are four years old and very friendly. “These dogs were starving to death,” said Rebecca Stevens executive director of the Humane Society. “Apollo gained 11 pounds and Athena gained 9 pounds in just one week with regular feedings. Not only were they starving for food, but also affection. I’m continually amazed by how abused these dogs can be and still love and trust human beings.”

Apollo and Athena are now in need of adoptive homes. “While what they’ve been through is horrible, our hope is that we can now give them the homes and life they’ve always deserved,” added Stevens.
