Several students from the Westfield Intermediate School’s fifth grade class taught by Kathy Lengerich decided to enter the Sons of the American Revolution Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest as a way to learn more about the American war for independence. Two students took top honors in the competition.
Michaela Eells won first place and Elijah Richardson was named the third place winner.
As the first place winner, Eells received an award of $200 in addition to a certificate and pin for outstanding citizenship. Her poster has advanced to the National Congress of the Sons of the American Revolution Society taking place in July. As the official entry representing Indiana, it will be judged against the entries of other states.
The Sons of the American Revolution Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest was open to all students in third, fourth and fifth grades that studied the American Revolution during their academic year. The goal of the contest is to stimulate interest in American history and support the curriculum of schools. This year’s theme, Guildford Courthouse, is one of the battles which the movie “The Patriot” was loosely based on.
Students were encouraged to be creative in expressing what they have learned about the topic through art and information. Judging is based on originality, evidence of research, artistic merit and accuracy of the historical event.
Members of the Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution met at the Indiana War Memorial for their annual meeting on April 14 and the judged the poster contest. The INSSAR is a historical, educational, and patriotic “lineage” society comprised of male descendants of patriots who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774-1783. They seek to maintain and expand the meaning of patriotism, respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship, and the unifying force of “E Pluribus Unum ” that was created from the people of many nations.
