The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Indiana announced Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard as the recipient of the 2012 Public Service of the Year Award at its annual meeting Wednesday.

Brainard was recognized for initiatives to improve infrastructure and economic development in Carmel during his five terms as mayor, according to ACEC officials.

“Mayor Brainard’s enthusiasm for the construction of roundabouts in the City of Carmel has inspired other cities around the world to consider introducing roundabouts as traffic solutions, for increased safety, effective commuting and environmental initiatives,” said ACEC Indiana President Bill Hall.

The construction of roundabouts at many of the Carmel’s busiest intersections, notably the “roundabouts in the air” along Keystone Parkway, have reduced traffic accidents with injury by as much as 80 percent, according to statistics kept by the city.

The Public Service of the Year Award was established in 1984 to pay tribute to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the profession of consulting engineering.
