Comic Review: The Red Wing

ND OnTheWeb RedwingAlthough I have always been a fan of comic book characters and films, I have never had the time, attention or expendable income before to really get into comics like I would have liked. After really delving in at the beginning of the summer, I’ve quickly come to find that there are some comic creators out there that have quickly come to rise above the pack in my mind. One such creator is Jonathan Hickman, creator of more well-known trades such as The Nightly News as well as current runs of Fantastic Four and S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Red Wing, created by Hickman and featuring art by Nick Pitarra, was originally a four-issue miniseries now collected in a single trade that chronicles several moments in the life of two rookie pilots joining the same flight wing that their fathers fought (and died) in. The Red Wing has one interesting advantage over most flying vehicles though: they can travel through time. Time is the central component of the entirety of The Red Wing’s storytelling and what gives it all of its atmosphere.

Hickman’s take on time travel pivots around the central basis that time is not linear, but appears more akin to a cylinder that can be traveled through in three dimensions in which there are no true paradoxes. This leads the two fledgling pilots into war from an enemy faction hailing from the future. As the story continues, more is divulged about the boys’ fathers as well as the effects that time travel and losing track of your ability (or perhaps limitation) to fathom time linearly can have on the human mind.

The resulting storyline is a breathtaking and interesting look into time and its effect on the human soul that is entirely unique from what I’ve seen in other mediums. The art is wonderful and truly adds to the atmosphere of the storytelling. Unfortunately, what The Red Wings suffers from most is a lack of true length. The concept being considered here is extremely deep, and with only four issues to work with, the story is not as well explained or as fully fledged as it could be if it had been given six issues or even eight. Either way, The Red Wing is a great trade from Hickman and a great way to experience something different from the standard superhero comic.

The Red Wing is available now at your local comic book store as well as online.
