Goodstock for a good cause

CIC COM GOODSTOCK JOSHMichael Shepard is a beloved guitar teacher in Carmel, and now his students are teaming up to help him out.

At 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Carmel Gazebo in Civic Square, a group of Shepard’s students and their families are hosting Goodstock – an event to raise money for Shepard’s son, Joshua.

Joshua Shepard was electrocuted in a construction accident three years ago in California
that has had degenerative effects.

“He’s now at the point where it’s affecting his breathing, his speaking,” said Shane Miller, Goodstock coordinator. “He’s starting to lose feeling in his limbs sometimes. In the last month they’ve made three runs to the emergency room because he couldn’t breathe.”

Miller said the Shepard family was overwhelmed when they learned about Goodstock.

“I really think Josh was to the point where he maybe was feeling like he was a little bit forgotten,” Miller said. “His spirits have just lifted greatly just knowing there’s a whole group of people out there trying to help him.”

Goodstock will feature The Wright Brothers Band along with local teen group ZMC Band and some of Shepard’s students. There will also be food and a silent auction.

Shane Miller’s son is one of those students. She said called up Shepard’s other pupils and they, as well as their families, all felt the same way.

“It was really put on our hearts to help this family,” Miller said. “The students are really pulling together to make this a reality. One of the students designed artwork, another made a Facebook page.”

Miller’s son, Brandon, designed most of the posters and also will be playing at the event.

“I respect my guitar teacher and I felt terrible about his son’s situation,” Brandon said.

“I think it’s going to be a really fun evening,” Miller said. “You’re going to be able to watch some of the younger, rising musicians in the area, and you know you’re helping someone who desperately needs your help.”
